Tanya’s Homesteading Journey
My husband worked a very high stress job for many years and we began seeing bad side effects. We have always wanted to homestead and had been praying about it for many years. It has just never worked out until recently, and it seems like the Lord was telling us Now is the time.
My husband is working a less stressful job and we are making a go of it. Our whole family is on board and even our teens are all excited about it. We want to live and work together as a family and actually enjoy the wonderful life God has blessed us with.
My family and I are currently using about 32,000 square feet of our property for gardening, but we plan on homesteading most of the property once we get everything cleaned up. In addition to gardens, we have young apple, plum, peach, and cherry trees.
Roaming around my homestead, we have chickens, ducks, and we raised a pig from spring to the beginning of winter for pork. I am trying to convince my husband that some type of dairy animal is a necessity. My family and I have plans to set up a small farm stand next year. We would like to have a “pick your own fruit” area as well as sell surplus veggies and eggs. We are looking into setting up a stand at one of the local farmers markets in our area as well.
We strives to homestead in the home as well. I have been homeschooling my children from the beginning of their education (we have one graduated and two in middle school). I cook the majority of our food from scratch and love experimenting in the kitchen. We eat a whole foods diet… most of the time. I also cans and preserves the majority of our fruits and vegetables and even can some of our meat.
We may have a big job ahead of ourselves restoring my husband’s family farm after twenty years of neglect, but we’ve always had the heart of homesteaders.
