What are lip scrubs and why use them?

A lip scrub is an exfoliating product designed specifically for removing dead skin cells from the sensitive lip area. They remove dead skin cells that dull the skin. When the skin on the lips gets excessively dry, the dead skin cells can begin to flake off, which results in peeling or chapped lips. At this point, lip balm will not help to remedy the problem. The dead skin cells must be removed first.

Below I have recipes for the best lip scrubs for you to try out.

My Favorite Homemade Lip Scrubs

1. Basic Lip Scrub

This is my go-to recipe because it is so ridiculously easy to throw together. The sugars act as an exfoliator and the coconut oils moisturize the skin. You can make a small single-use batch or you can prepare a small jar of it. I prefer to use a quarter-pint mason jar or an old baby food jar and store it in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp. coconut oil, soft
  • 2 tbsp. white sugar
  • 1 tsp. turbinado sugar (if you don’t have this you can use brown sugar)

Instructions

  1. If needed, soften the coconut oil a little bit in the microwave in a heat-safe dish, then add in the white sugar.
  2. Mix well and then add in the coarse, turbinado sugar. If you don’t have coarse turbinado sugar on hand, you can use brown sugar.
  3. Depending on how thick you would like it to be, you could always add a little more of one or both of the sugars together for a firmer scrub.

To use, simply apply to your lips and gently rub in a circular motion to exfoliate the top layer and soften your lips. Follow up with a moisturizing lip balm like this 10-minute DIY lip balm by Happiness is Homemade.

This will store well for months in a sealed container in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to use it again just spoon a little out and soften the coconut oil with the warmth of your hands.

How often should you use a lip scrub?

Is it okay to use lip scrub every day? Less is more on this one. It’s wise to not exfoliate more than twice a week. Start with once a week so you avoid irritating your lips. Also, be careful not to scrub too hard or you might end up with irritating wounds on your lips, which will increase the dryness and flaking you were trying to eliminate in the first place.

Some people will use soft toothbrushes to exfoliate, but those tend to be too harsh. A fingertip is more than sufficient. If you have sensitive lips, I recommend applying your scrub gently with a ring finger (as that tends to be the weakest finger that will apply the least amount of pressure).
